default webverzeichnis /var/www per .htaccess schützen

hallo
habe bei meinem debian sarge stable mit apache2 follgendes problem:
.htaccess in /var/www funktioniert nicht,
aber in einem virtuellem server z.B /home/user funktioniert tadellos.
wie kann ich meinem apache 2 beibringen /var/www zu schützen ?

Genau so wie jedes andere Verzeichnis. Dem Server ist es egal ob die zu schützende Direktive zufällig auch DocumentRoot ist.

leider bei debian stable ist nicht der fall !

Was steht bei dir hinter AllowOverride in der Verzeichnisdirektive, deren Pfad DocumentRoot entspricht (nicht DocRoot unter "Main Server Configuration" selbst!)?
