Hi badenwuerttemberg

may be its more easy if you write in english. <img src="http://www.pl-forum.de/UltraBoard/Images/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">
So what do you want to know? How to format a ZIP?
You can do this using the mkfs command, e.g.
mkfs -t msdos /dev/[your zip device]
for a DOS formatted ZIP.

Tell me if I misunderstood your question.

Bye,
Markus

Hi badenwuerttemberg,

I have to admit that I have no experience neither with Amiga OS nor with 250MB Zip.
But nevermind. I will try. <img src="http://www.pl-forum.de/UltraBoard/Images/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">

First of all, have you tried just do create a new filesystem using mkfs? (see point 1a), 2.)
If this does not work then try the following steps:

1. probably you have to create a new partition on the Zip first.
Are you familiar with a partitioning tool? You can use Linux fdisk for this purpose. Do the following:
a) check what device your Zip-drive is. (e.g. /dev/hdc)
You can find out in the file /etc/fstab, or if there is no entry in this file, you schould find the information in the bootmaessages (/var/log/messages). Here I find for example : 'kernel: hdc: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive'
so my zip is /dev/hdc.

b) if you know the devicename (please make sure that it is not your harddisc! <img src="http://www.pl-forum.de/UltraBoard/Images/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">) then insert the 250MB Zip and run the following command (as root):
> fdisc <your zip device>
e.g. : > fdisc /dev/hdc

you will be prompted with the message:
'comamnd (m for help): '

so type m <enter> and you will get a list of possible commands.
p will show existing partitions on the Zip. Try this first.
( ---> If you now see all the partitions on your harddrive, then you did definitely choose the wrong device! So quit with q and try again with the correct device! )

With the comamnd d you can delete the existing partition on the zip.
Then use the n command to create a new one:
choose primary partition
choose number 1
choose type 83 (Linux)

check again with l - is the new partition there?
if yes, then use the w command to write the partitiontable onto the Zip.

2. Now as you have created a new partition you can format the zip.
Use the following command (I don't know if you have to be root for this):
mke2fs <your zip device>
e.g. : > mke2fs /dev/hdc

Then your zip should be usable for Linux.

If you run into trouble or if the zip also needs to be usable for Windows,
let me know.

Good luck! <img src="http://www.pl-forum.de/UltraBoard/Images/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">
