Es gibt 2 Wege:
Standalone und inetd
Standalone: /etc/init.d/NAMEDERANWENDUNG start
bei Proftpd ist es also "/etc/init.d/proftpd start"
Inetd: InetD bedeutet das ein anderes Programm (Der Inet Daemon) auf die eingehenden Signale wartet und das eigentliche Programm nur bei bedarf aktiviert.
Editiere dazu /etc/inetd.conf
Starte danach /etc/init.d/inetd start oder starte es neu wenn es schon läuft mit /etc/init.d/inetd restart.
Um zu Prüfen ob eine Anwendung schon läuft musst du "/etc/init.d/NAMEDERANWENDUNG status" eingeben.

wenn ich das versuche kommt folgendes:
root@formela:/etc/init.d > proftpd start

ich kann die teile nicht leiden. probier doch mal <!--http--><a href="http://www.xitami.com" target="_blank">xitami</a><!--url-->, da ist auch gleich ein htmlserver dabei und leicht zu konfigurieren auch übers net, einfach spitze.

Den ProFTP Daemon setze ich auch beruflich ein allerdings nicht auf GNU/Linux sondern auf Solaris/SPARC.
Das mit
- Fatal: <Anonymous>: directive not allowed in <Directory> section.
ist ein Fehler in deiner Konfigurationsdatei "proftpd.conf" (/etc/proftpd.conf ?).
Es ist nicht erlaubt in einem <Directory> Abschnitt einen <Anonymous> zu konfigurieren.
Vielmehr muss es genau umgekehrt aussehen:
